Research - Representation

What social group are you representing?
My magazine is focused on women empowerment and self-improvement and therefore i am representing women who are trying to find their path in life but also want ways to seize the moment and be grateful for what they have currently. Women from all areas of the career spectrums and upbringings.

What identity are you hoping to promote?
I am trying to demonstrate how common it is to feel uncertain about your future. I will target these women by proving that the possibilities are limitless and that there are no confinements to what life paths women can take

Would any feminist theories apply?
Van Zoonen - stereotypes of women being unable to take control of their own lives and create their own path is rooted in years of women being confined to the housewife occupation. My magazine subverts the theory by proving that women have the ability to decide who they want to be and not allowing stereotypes or predisposed life paths to stop them. We, as women, should not box ourselves into the category society puts us in if we want change.

Representations - gender, ethnicity, age, sexuality
intersectionality is very important and representation of ethnicity will be tied into my discussion by default. It is important to acknowledge the elevated difficulty for women of colour (WOC). Hence the woman on my front cover will be WOC. Themes of age will be alluded to in the coverlines as my target audience are women in their 20s and 30s who want a sense of personal identity and crave intellectual stimulation to ultimately better themselves.

How will these representations be made clear?
My coverlines will include relevant topics and my main article will be rooted in female experiences and backgrounds. The front cover will be pivotal in visualising these representations as i depict a strong women in a managerial position who still sees the importance of taking care of herself - women can be strong AS WELL as vulnerable.

How will the representations engage the audience?
Personal identity is what will enagage audiences. Being able to see women like them in a position of power and success will inspire them to prosper. Women would pick up this magazine purely for motivation and empowerment, and it will provide them will all the secrets and tricks into becoming successful and feeling proud of your achievements, as well as reminding them about the importance of self-care and seizing the moment.
